Perez v. Chevron USA

$1.5 Million For Refinery Safety Attendant Who Developed Acute Myelogenous Leukemia

From August 2000 through September 2001, Billie Jean Perez worked as a safety attendant for Welltech Safety Services at the Chevron and Equilon refineries in Northern California. Mrs. Perez worked 12 hours per day on "turnarounds" - maintenance projects in which units are shut down for repairs. In her work, Mrs. Perez smelled a sweet odor – an odor like benzene.

Medical Summary

In December 2002, Mrs. Perez was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. She underwent chemotherapy, achieved a brief remission, and was being readied for peripheral stem cell transplantation at the time the case settled.

Mediation Leads to Successful Settlement

Due to Mrs. Perez's life-threatening medical condition, the court fast-tracked her case and set trial in just 120 days. At a mediation shortly before trial, the case settled for $1.5 million - all of which was paid by Welltech's insurance company, which insured not only Welltech but also Chevron and Equilon.
