Plantation Workers in West Africa Sterile from Pesticide Banned by EPA;
Long Beach Firm Sues Chemical Companies & Plantation Owner for Crimes Against Humanity
The Metzger Law Group is suing Shell Chemical Company, Dow Chemical Company, Amvac Corporation, and Dole Food Company on behalf of 668 West African plantation workers, claiming that the pesticide "DBCP" caused them to become sterile. DBCP was banned by the EPA 27 years ago because it causes physical deformities, sterility, cancer and birth defects.

On December 6, 2005, Raphael Metzger was an invited speaker at the California Industrial Hygiene Council in San Francisco, California. Mr. Metzger's presentation was titled "Chemical Exposure Litigation: What Rules Do We Play By" and showed why the industrial hygienist is the most important expert witness in toxic tort litigation.
Raphael Metzger, Guest Speaker at Mealey's Benzene Litigation Conference On October 18, 2005, Raphael Metzger was an invited speaker at Mealey's Benzene Litigation Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Metzger's presentation was titled "Benzene State of Art: What They Knew and When They Knew It" and showed that the petroleum industry knew that benzene caused blood diseases as early as 1897 and was aware that benzene causes leukemia at least as early as 1948. Mr. Metzger's presentation inlcuded powerpoints with excerpts from historical articles and industry documents regarding the hazards of benzene.
Raphael Metzger chairs Benzene Litigation Conference On September 29 and 30, 2005, Raphael Metzger chaired a conference on Benzene Litigation at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina Del Rey. The conference was sponsored by HarrisMartin Publishers and was attended by more than 150 attorneys who litigate and defend benzene cases. The conference featured leading benzene litigation attorneys and experts in technical and medical fields related to benzene litigation. Raphael Metzger presents paper at Collegium Ramazzini
From September 18 to September 21 2005, Raphael Metzger attended a conference "Framing the Future in Light of the Past: Living in a Chemical World." The conference was sponsored by the Collegium Ramazzini, an international society of physicians and researchers specializing in occupational medicine and environmental health, and took place in Bologne, Italy, home of the Collegium Ramazzini. At the conference Mr. Metzger presented a paper titled: "The Alien Tort Claims Act: A Remedy for Chemical Genocide."
Raphael Metzger chairs the annual meeting and educational program of the STEP of ATLA
On July 25, 2005, Raphael Metzger chaired the annual meeting and educational program of the Section on Toxic Environmental and Pharmaceutical Torts (STEP) of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA) in Toronto. Mr. Metzger spoke on "Proving Exposure and Dose." Other speakers at the program included Arthur H. Bryant of Trial Lawyers for Public Justice, "Fighting Federal Preemption;" Professor Carl F. Cranor of the University of California at Riverside, "Science Versus Judicially Constructed Science;" Mark R. Cuker, "New Approaches to Defeating the Statute of Limitations;" Ellen S. Relkin, "The Sword or the Shield: Use of Governmental Regulations, Exposure Standards and Toxicological Data in Toxic Tort Litigation;" Gyan S. Rajhans, "Historical Review of American Asbestos Standards." Several presentations were also made by expert practictioners regarding toxins currently in litigation.

Mr. Metzger chaired the final panel discussion of the conference with two esteemed scientists regarding scientific issues concerning benzene toxicity.
