Juan Lopez
Settlements of more than $600,000 for silk screen printer who developed Thrombocytopenic Purpura from paints and solvents
Case: Lopez v. Camie-Campbell, Inc., et al. Injury:Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) - a blood disease, a (bleeding)disorder of the blood
Juan Lopez worked as a silk screen printer for Milano Design Concepts in Los Angeles from 1997 through 2001. As a silk screen printer, Lopez sprayed paints from aerosol cans onto silk screens and sprayed solvents onto the screens to clean them. During his employment, he experienced headaches, lightheadedness, nausea, and other symptoms of overexposure such as petechiae. When he was unable to continue working, he sought medical attention and was determined to have a blood disorder which was diagnosed as Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura. As treatment for this disease, Mr. Lopez was prescribed immunosuppressants and underwent splenectomy (removal of his spleen). Mr. Lopez's condition improved considerably following splenectomy and his blood counts returned to normal.
On Mr. Lopez's behalf, the Metzger Law Group sued the manufacturers and distributors of the paints and solvents he used in his work, claiming that they all contained benzene and that benzene contaminating the products caused his blood disease. Although Mr. Lopez's disease had resolved following splenectomy, he claimed that he had an increased risk of developing leukemia as a consequence of his toxic exposure and blood disease.
On Mr. Lopez's behalf, the Metzger Law Group negotiated settlements totaling more than $600,000.
