Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Thrombocytopenic purpura is a hematologic condition characterized by a low platelet count and mucocutaneous bleeding. There are a number of varieties of the disease. When the disease is cause by an autoimmune process (i.e., the human body attacking itself), the disease may be called "Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura."

Chemical Exposure Causes of Thrombocytopenic Purpura

In addition to drugs, some industrial chemicals have been reported to cause the disease.

See, e.g., Jennings, G. H., et al., "Thrombocytopenic purpura in toluene di-isocyanate workers," The Lancet i:406 (1963); Mastromatteo, E., "Hematological Disorders Following Exposure to Insecticides," Can. Med. Assoc. J. 90:1166-1168 (May 16, 1964); Nalbandian, R.M., et al., "Allergic purpura induced by exposure to p-dichlorobenzene: Confirmation by indirect basophil degranulation test," J. Am. Med. Assoc. 194(7):828-829 (Nov. 15, 1965); Dodson, V.N., "Purpura and Chemicals," J. Occup. In particular, benzene exposure has been linked to thrombocytopenic purpura. Read more about benzene and thrombocytopenic purpura >>
