Early Exposure to Lung Irritants Results in Problems Later
Tuesday, May 30, 2006
A study presented at the May, 2006, American Thoracic Society International Conference indicates a young worker's exposure to lung irritants can result in lung problems later in life. The study consisted of 348 apprentices of painters, machinists, electricians and insulators who were in their early 20s in 1988.

High Percentage of Californians Endorsed Prop. 65
Monday, May 22, 2006
Senator Barbara Boxer understands that the public health of Californians is in jeopardy and we need state protection against toxic chemicals. Did you know that 63% of Californian voters endorsed Proposition 65? Could that be because we don't want a food company to intentionally expose us to known carcinogens or reproductive toxins? Call us picky eaters, but we want to know what is in the food we eat.

EPA Drops Plan to Approve Pesticide
Thursday, May 18, 2006
Methyl bromide which has been used in strawberry fields for years has been banned because it harms the Earth's ozone layer. However, farmers still use this dangerous chemical because they have yet to find a fumigant replacement. The problem with the proposed substitute pesticide, methyl iodide, is that it is also a toxic and dangerous chemical. The EPA has decided to hold off for another year before approving one dangerous chemical for another. Hey, it's a start in the right direction.

Interstitial Lung Disease
Wednesday, May 17, 2006
While progress and symptoms of Interstitial Lung Disease will vary, all ILD begins with inflammation of the lung tissue. Examinations of choice for early screening are high-resolution computed tomography (CT) and pulmonary function tests.

Toxic Hazards May Result from Chemical Mixtures
Tuesday, May 16, 2006
While one chemical and one exposure alone may do no harm in very low doses, mix it up with a couple of other chemicals and it can produce dangerous effects even at low concentrations. For instance, when growing crops there can be several different chemicals, pesticides and herbicides used for one field of corn.
Another compelling argument for buying organic food is reported by Miriam Amselem in her article, "The Case for Organic Food" as she reminds us "...we import produce from other countries that still use the chemicals which have been banned in our own country." So, in reality, we don't know how many toxic chemicals have been mixed together to produce those bananas we had for breakfast this morning. It is not just one chemical and one exposure anymore.
The overwhelming task at hand with tens of thousands of chemicals in regular use worldwide, is determining which combinations cause the most significant harm and how dangerous they are when they interact.

Have You Heard about Phthalates?
Monday, May 15, 2006
Around a billion pounds are produced worldwide each year. We have all been exposed, and according to The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they probably are present in everyone's body. Phthalates (pronounced THAY-lates) are petroleum-derived plasticizers that are commonly used to make PVC plastic soft and pliable. These products contain chemicals as well as other toxins and can be found in toys, food wraps, and cosmetics. That new car smell is partly the odor of phthalates evaporating from the hot plastic dashboard. Inside our homes, phthalates are used in countertops, flooring and even furniture. These toxic chemicals have surrounded us for 50 years and researchers are just now beginning to see that these chemicals can interfere with our normal body chemistry and cause health issues. Does anybody else feel like a lab rat?

Biomonitoring for Toxins Reintroduced
Tuesday, May 09, 2006
Senate Bill 1379 allowing biomonitoring for Toxins reintroduced.
"Everyday living may be hazardous to your health," reports Jim Sanders of the Sacramento Bee. This should really sink in when you read the shocking statistic in his article that, "More than 100,000 chemicals are registered for use in the United States, but fewer than one in 10 have been tested for effects on human health." Should we wait another 50 years to fully identify chemical and environmental causes of many chronic diseases? The tide is turning away from the benefits that chemicals have brought and pulling us towards the reality of how much toxic chemicals have really cost humanity.

Toxic Chemicals Transform Our DNA
Monday, May 08, 2006
Our DNA is under constant attack by environmental agents including toxic chemicals which scientists are discovering causes nucleobases in DNA to undergo a transformation. Genomics is the study of genes over time as a dynamic system to determine how they interact and influence biological pathways. In contrast to genetics which only looks at single genes individually. This new field of science provides great potential for establishing particular "genetic fingerprints" of diseases caused by various toxins.

Corporate Policies Differ Regarding Toxic Chemical Use
Thursday, May 04, 2006
Two stories came across the wire this week showing the vast disparity of how corporate America thinks. One article posted in the Grand Forks Herald explained that the 3M Company agreed to pay a $1.5 million dollar penalty to the EPA and has already begun phasing out the Teflon related chemical PFOA. Ironically, The Courier Post reported the next day that DuPont's shareholders rejected a proposal to phase out the very same chemical. And, this is in spite of the fact that DuPont is facing a $5 billion class-action lawsuit because of PFOA.

Environment May Never Recover from Toxic Spill
Wednesday, May 03, 2006
We earlier reported that there was a spill in China, resulting in toxic levels of benzene in the Songhua River.
Now that the frozen disaster is melting, the environment may never recover. Health officials have already examined children with never-before-seen genetic defects in their kidneys caused by these toxic chemicals.
