Diacetyl in Popcorn Linked to Lung Disease
Sunday, April 30, 2006
Diacetyl used to enhance the flavor of butter has been linked to a fatal lung disease. The disease is rare and has been called "popcorn worker's lung" by the press. Bronchiolitis obliterans causes the lungs to rapidly thicken creating scarring and inflammation which obstructs the airways. It causes irreversible damage to the lungs and is often fatal. A suit filed in February 2006 alleges that the Flavor and Extract Manufacturing Association fraudulently concealed information about the health risks of diacetyl. Imagine that.

Benzene in Soft Drinks Lawsuits Filed in the U.S.
Friday, April 28, 2006

Acrylamide Litigation Moving Forward
Monday, April 24, 2006
On March 29, 2006, The Los Angeles Daily Journal reported that Superior Court Judge Wendell Mortimer, Jr., lifted the stay in place since 2003 in the case seeking to require warnings to consumers that french fries contain acrylamide, a cancer causing chemical. The Metzger Law Group representing the Council for Education and Research on Toxics (CERT) filed the first case in 2002 and will be litigating the case jointly with the Attorney General's office. The article also explained that the food industry backed bill (HR 4167) passed the House, but is facing difficulties in the Senate. The bill was intended largely to nullify the acrylamide litigation, but for now this litigation is moving forward.
