Have You Heard about Phthalates?

Monday, May 15, 2006

Around a billion pounds are produced worldwide each year. We have all been exposed, and according to The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they probably are present in everyone's body. Phthalates (pronounced THAY-lates) are petroleum-derived plasticizers that are commonly used to make PVC plastic soft and pliable. These products contain chemicals as well as other toxins and can be found in toys, food wraps, and cosmetics. That new car smell is partly the odor of phthalates evaporating from the hot plastic dashboard. Inside our homes, phthalates are used in countertops, flooring and even furniture. These toxic chemicals have surrounded us for 50 years and researchers are just now beginning to see that these chemicals can interfere with our normal body chemistry and cause health issues. Does anybody else feel like a lab rat?
