Diacetyl in Popcorn Linked to Lung Disease
Sunday, April 30, 2006
Diacetyl used to enhance the flavor of butter has been linked to a fatal lung disease. The disease is rare and has been called "popcorn worker's lung" by the press. Bronchiolitis obliterans causes the lungs to rapidly thicken creating scarring and inflammation which obstructs the airways. It causes irreversible damage to the lungs and is often fatal. A suit filed in February 2006 alleges that the Flavor and Extract Manufacturing Association fraudulently concealed information about the health risks of diacetyl. Imagine that.
