Steven C. Rice

Steven C. Rice received his undergraduate education at Harvard University in 1980, cum laude, and received his J.D. from the University of California, Davis in 1983, graduating in the top one-third of his class.

Mr. Rice has been a civil litigator in Long Beach since 1983. He has handled several cases in which his client received over one million dollars, either through judgment or settlement. Mr. Rice’s cases involve diverse areas of civil litigation from tort and contract law, professional negligence and malpractice to civil rights litigation. He has been designated by other attorneys as an expert witness in the fields of insurance defense and civil litigation.

Working in cooperation with Long Beach Legal Aid, Steve represented a group of tenants in achieving the largest civil settlement from a ‘slumlord' in Long Beach history. In Salazar v. Diversified Paratransit, Inc. (2004) 117 Cal.App.4th 318, Mr. Rice successfully argued for the reversal of an earlier decision of the Court of Appeals which had restricted the rights of plaintiffs in Fair Employment and Housing Act cases to bring actions against an employer when they failed to take reasonable steps to stop sexual harassment of employees by customers.

Mr. Rice is a member of the California Bar, and all federal district courts in California, including the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. He is also a member of the American Bar Association and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. As a member of the Long Beach Bar Association he served as chairman of its membership and legislative committees. Steve joined the Metzger Law Group in 2005.
