Gloria Amos

Gloria Amos

Gloria Amos started with the firm as a part-time bookkeeper in 1995 at the age of 65! This was Gloria's first job in the legal field; her "formative" years were spent as a bookkeeper for aerospace companies and a helicopter company. (Gloria loves to fly!)

When Martin Aviation ceased its operations in Long Beach 1995 and there were no jobs to be found in aerospace, Gloria looked for other bookkeeping jobs and accepted a part-time job with the firm, because she didn't want to be idle.

Doing bookkeeping for a plaintiff's law firm was quite a shock for Gloria. She looked at the firm's accounts payable and said, "Oh my!" She could not believe the expenses the firm incurred -- especially for expert witnesses. Gloria had an even bigger shock when she asked to see the accounts receivable and was told that there were none. Gloria was mystified that a business could run without any accounts receivable. It took quite a while to explain to Gloria that the firm was only "paid" when it won or settled a client's case. Gloria thought this was a most unprofessional way to run a business. However, she soon learned and accepted the oddities of doing bookkeeping for a plaintiff's law firm, and she flourished in her new job.

Gloria proved to be very adept at learning new computer programs. She mastered Quickbooks and Lotus 1-2-3 and then started on Word Perfect and the Internet. Gloria proved so capable that she was given more and more responsibility, until she was eventually working full-time – something she said she would never do again. In May 1999 the firm celebrated Gloria's 70th birthday and sent her to Hawaii for a well-deserved vacation. When Gloria returned from Hawaii she was officially appointed the firm's Administrator – a new job to start her seventh decade.

Gloria doesn't realize that she's 70 years old. She's always ready to carry boxes around the office and run errands for the firm. Mr. Metzger gave Gloria strict instructions not to do any heavy lifting, so she only moves boxes when he is in court. She just doesn't want to upset him! However, Gloria and Mr. Metzger do agree on one thing. When he appointed her Administrator, Mr. Metzger told Gloria that he wouldn't be retiring for at least 15 years and that she couldn't retire until he did. That was just fine with Gloria. She has no intention of retiring any time soon!

Gloria lives in a senior complex in Long Beach and keeps in touch by e-mail with her daughter and granddaughter who live in Illinois. Keep going Gloria!
