Q & A : Dole Food Company

What is Dole Food Company?

Dole Food Company is an American multinational agriculture corporation. Dole was recently in the news because it sold spinach contaminated with E coli that caused the death of at least one consumer and sickened many others.

What is Standard Fruit Company?

Standard Fruit Company was a subsidiary of Castle & Cooke, and is now owned by Dole.

What do Dole and Standard Fruit have to do with DBCP?

Standard Fruit was a major purchaser and user of DBCP. Even after news media had reported that DBCP caused sterility in workers at Occidental's plant, Standard Fruit continued buying DBCP from Dow Chemical Company and exposing plantation workers to it - from 1978 well into the 1980s.

What do Dole and Standard Fruit have to do with the plantation workers in the Ivory Coast?

For years Dole owned a 40% interest in Compagnie Fruitiere, which owned banana plantations in the Ivory Coast where DBCP was used. Now Dole owns the plantations outright.

Dole chose to use this extremely toxic chemical, instead of a safer alternative. Dole failed to warn its workers of the hazards and Dole failed to provide equipment that would protect its workers.
